One feature unique to the Basic Search component is the capacity to
perform a keywords search. This is the only field that can
be searched in a Basic Search. A keyword search queries
all 26 unique fields of CMCC artifact information. If the user is unsure
of which field of information to query, he/she should try a
keyword search first. This type of search is very general and
is most commonly used by curious individuals who are interested in discovering
what types of artifacts the CMCC has in its collection as opposed to serious
research inquiries.
In an Advanced Search, the user is able to query fifteen unique fields
of artifact data. This type of search is more specific and affords a more
refined look at the CMCC artifact collection. It is most often used by a
student or researcher who has some understanding of museum terminology and
database structure.
Common to both the Basic Search and Advanced Search is the
any word/all words option. When the any word
option is selected the system queries the database for any
occurance of the term being searched for regardless of which field it has
been entered into. When the all words option is selected, the
system searches the database for only those records that contain
all the terms being searched. In both the Basic Search
and the Advanced Search, punctuation, case and word order are ignored.
Entry can be made in either French or English. Results are displayed in
accordance with the screen language format identified by the user.
